Volkswagen has embarked on a groundbreaking journey into the future of automotive technology, unveiling the integration of the artificial-intelligence-based chatbot, ChatGPT, into its Intelligent Drive Assistant (IDA) voice assistant at CES 2024.

Powered by Cerence Chat Pro from technology partner Cerence Inc., this innovative move establishes Volkswagen as the first volume manufacturer to standardize ChatGPT in production vehicles. From the second quarter of 2024, models including the ID.7, ID.4, ID.5, ID.3, the all-new Tiguan, and the all-new Passat, as well as the new Golf, will feature this cutting-edge technology.

Enabled by Cerence Chat Pro, the integration of ChatGPT goes beyond conventional voice control, transforming the IDA voice assistant into a multifunctional tool. Drivers now have seamless control over infotainment, navigation, air conditioning, and can even pose general knowledge questions. This integration not only redefines the in-car experience but also positions the vehicle as a mobile hub of information and entertainment.

Kai Grünitz, Member of the Board of Management Volkswagen Brand for Technical Development, emphasized Volkswagen’s commitment to democratizing technology, stating,

Thanks to the seamless integration of ChatGPT and strong collaboration with our partner, Cerence, we are offering our drivers added value and direct access to the AI-based research tool. This also underlines the innovative strength of our new products.

As Volkswagen paves the way for the future of automotive technology, the integration of ChatGPT into the IDA voice assistant sets a new standard for in-car AI experiences, promising a journey where information, entertainment, and safety seamlessly converge.
